Remembrance Day 11 November - Lest we Forget
Remembrance Day is the day Australians remember those who have died in war.
In 1918 the armistice that ended World War I came into force, bringing to an end four years of hostilities that saw 61 919 Australians die at sea, in the air, and on foreign soil. Few Australian families were left untouched by the events of World War I - 'the war to end all wars' most had lost a father, son, daughter, brother, sister or friend.
At 11am on 11 November we pause to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served during the past 100 years.
Origin
At 5am on 11 November 1918, three German government representatives accepted the armistice terms presented to them by an allied commander, General Foch of the French Army. The demands of the armistice included the withdrawal of German forces to the east bank of the Rhine within 30 days; immediate cessation of warfare; and surrender of the German fleet and all heavy guns with no further negotiations until the signing of the peace treaty.
The armistice became effective at 11am the same day, and as the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium, four years of hostilities ended.
The cease-fire was made permanent the following year when members of the Commonwealth and the League of Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles. People across the world celebrated the war's end - celebrations tempered by thoughts of the enormous suffering and loss of life resulting from the war.
More than 416 000 Australians volunteered for service in World War I. Of these, 324 000 served overseas. More than 60 000 Australians were killed, including 45 000 who died on the Western Front in France and Belgium and more than 8 000 who died on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.
In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day - a day to remember those who died in World War I. The day continues to be commemorated in Allied countries.
After World War II the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom's proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day.
In October 1997 the Governor-General issued a Proclamation declaring 11 November as Remembrance Day - a day to remember the sacrifice of those who have died for Australia in wars and conflicts.
The Proclamation reinforced the importance of Remembrance Day and encouraged all Australians to renew their observance of the event.
Silence
The central element of Remembrance Day ceremonies is the one minute silence.
A Melbourne journalist, Edward George Honey, first proposed a period of silence for national remembrance in a letter published in the London Evening News on 8 May 1919.
The suggestion came to the attention of King George V. After testing the practicality of five minutes silence - a trial was held with five Grenadier Guardsmen standing to attention for the silence - the King issued a proclamation on 7 November 1919 which called for a two-minute silence. His proclamation requested that "all locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead".
At 11am on 11 November 1919, Australians, for the first time, paused and stood in silent tribute to the men and women of the Australian Imperial Force who died on battlefields in the Middle East, Gallipoli and Europe.
In 1997 the Governor-General issued a Proclamation urging all Australians to observe the one minute silence on Remembrance Day. It is still appropriate for two minutes silence to be observed.
Poppies
In 1915, Major John McCrae, brigade-surgeon, First Brigade Canadian Forces Artillery, was working in a dressing station on the front line to the north of Ieper, Belgium, when he wrote In Flanders Fields:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
In 1918 Moira Michael, an American, wrote a poem in reply, We shall keep the faith, in which she promised to wear a poppy 'in honour of our dead' and so began the tradition of wearing a poppy in remembrance.
It was French YMCA Secretary, Madame Guerin, who in 1918 conceived the idea of selling silk poppies to help needy soldiers.
Poppies were first sold in England on Armistice Day in 1921 by members of the British Legion to raise money for those who had been incapacitated by the war.
The practice began in Australia the same year, promoted by the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia (now known as the Returned & Services League of Australia or RSL).
In the lead-up to 11 November each year, the RSL sells red poppies for Australians to pin on their lapels, with proceeds helping the organisation undertake welfare work.
Since 1921 wearing a poppy has enabled Australians to show they have not forgotten the more than 102 000 Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars and conflicts during the past 100 years.
Flanders poppy seeds may be grown in Australian gardens. By planting the seeds in April, the poppies bloom in November, in time for Remembrance Day. They serve as a visual reminder of those Australians who have died in war.
Rosemary
The Ancient Greeks believed that rosemary made their memories stronger. This idea has been carried on today when people wear sprigs of rosemary as a symbol of remembrance for those who have died in wars.
Unknown soldiers
Twentieth century warfare resulted in millions of unknown dead resting in unknown graves. Of Australia's war dead from World War I and World War II, 35 527 (about 35 per cent) have no known graves.
The names of many Australians who died in World War I appear on memorials along the Western Front, including the names of about 18 000 men of the Australian Imperial Force with 'no known grave'.
In 1993, to mark the 75th anniversary of the 1918 armistice, the Australian Government exhumed the remains of an unknown Australian soldier from the Western Front for entombment at the Australian War Memorial's Hall of Memory, Canberra.
The Unknown Soldier's remains were exhumed from the Adelaide Cemetery, near Villers-Bretonneux on the Western Front. A State Funeral was held on 11 November 1993 - Remembrance Day.
Before proceeding to the Hall of Memory, the Unknown Soldier's coffin was placed on the Stone of Remembrance outside the Memorial where the Prime Minister, Paul Keating, delivered a eulogy:
. . . We will never know who this Australian was. Yet he has always been among those we have honoured. We know that he was one of the 45,000 Australians who died on the Western Front, one of the 416,000 Australians who volunteered for service in World War I . . . and one of the 100,000 Australians who have died in wars this century. He is all of them. And he is one of us.
As Australia's Unknown Soldier was laid to rest in the Hall of Memory, World War I veteran Robert Comb, who had served in battles on the Western Front, sprinkled soil from Pozieres, France, over the coffin and said, "Now you're home, mate".

Scrapbooking
Well I'm going to give it a go. Although I probably do have some creativity in me I have never considered myself to be creative - in the Arts sense. Ballerina on the other hand is quite creative and loves to do crafty things - she gets it from my Mother - must have skipped a generation.
Anyway my Mum gave Ballerina some scrapbooking material to bring home from Adelaide last week and I've decided we'll give it a whirl.
Most people I talk to, who are in the midst of this scrapbooking for memories craze, seem to be quite addicted to it. I've been told it can be quite expensive. But I have always been fairly creative with my money - so I'm sure we can do it on a budget.
Anyway I will post my creations - don't hold your breath though - it may take a while for the first one!!
Enjoy your day!!
Barnyard - The original party animals
School holiday times and the kids mooooovies are here. If you get an opportunity to take your kids to this movie please do. Even if you don't have kids it's worth a watch.
Don't want to build it up too much, but for a bit of a giggle and lesson in life go see this mooooovie on the big screen.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BARN STAYS IN THE BARN!!!
A Busy Week - family time in Adelaide
Well I have had a busy week and haven't had much of a chance to sit down and blog. Spent some time in Adelaide this week combining work with pleasure. Spent time with my family - wonderful - in Adelaide. It's school holidays here so I took Ballerina and she spent time with Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. She had a great time. It was a short trip - 2 days, but it is always nice to catch up with family and spend time with them.
So I have a bit of catching up to do!!

Congratulations to our Ballerina!!!
Yesterday our beautiful daughter completed her Grade 4 Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) exam for ballet. We are so very proud of her. She commenced ballet this year and has come forward in leaps and bounds (as ballerinas do). She will now commence in her pointe classes which she is very excited about. Although she will not find out her results for a few weeks we know she has done very well!! We love you Ballerina

Friday Feast 109
What are some lyrics you have misheard (such as, instead of "Gettin' Jiggy With It" you heard "Kick a chicken with it")?
Instead of "with a finger and a thumb in the shape of an L on her forehead" I heard "with a finger and a bum near her forehead" - not sure what I was thinking but it conjured up some interesting images!!!
Soup
What is the worst movie you have ever seen?
I'm not much of a movie watcher so those I choose to watch I normally choose very carefully and tend to enjoy but I would say, much to the disagreement of many, the Lord of the Rings movies never kept me entertained for too long.
Salad
Using the letters from your favorite number, write a sentence. Example: Tomorrow has really easy experiences.

What was the most interesting news story you have heard this week?
It doesn't take much to interest me - Jennifer Hawkins (former Miss Universe) accepted an invitation by a Year 12 student to partner him at his school formal in November. She then decided that she might overshadow the whole formal experience for many of the kids and declined to attend but will be 'going out' to lunch with the young lad. Probably a good decision - I would expect many of the 17 yr old girls attending the formal would have faded into the darkness.

Which word(s) would you choose to describe your wardrobe?
Last season, comfy and very me!!!

I love our Son - his quirky teenage ways and his innocent outlook on life remind me how simple things should be. 3. I love our Daughter - her innocence, her beauty and that look that makes you melt - reminds me to not take things too seriously. 4. I love the simplicity of my life, it reminds me how lucky I am. 5. I love where I live - beautiful Queensland, Australia - it still is the lucky country. 6. I love my friends - I don't make friends easily but those I do make I hold close to my heart. 7. I love that my family put up with my overly optimistic outlook on life - she'll be right mate!! 8. I love that I have the freedom to make choices - whatever they may be. 9. I love that I have the courage to make those choices. 10. I love my extended family - their support is always there. 11. I love that we are building a new home. 12. I love that I often take the road less travelled. 13. I love because I can!!!! Links to other Thursday Thirteens! 1. (leave your link in comments, I’ll add you here!) |

Year of the....
You Were Actually Born Under: |
Your charisma and charm makes it easy for you to influence others. Lucky in life, you also have a reputation of being lucky in love. Power hungry, you are determined to get what you want - no matter what it takes. You are most compatible with a Monkey or Rat. |
You Should Have Been Born Under: |
You've got a ton of energy - and need plenty of room to roam. You tend to follow your whims, and it's hard for you to stick to one thing. Specific jobs, loves, and friends are always changing and never a part of your life for long. Very intuitive, you tend to know what people are thinking before they say a word. You are most compatible with a Dog or Tiger. |

OH my blogging is bigger than I thought
Well I have spent most of the day looking at other blogs - and my oh my have I been kept busy. Thursday Thirteen, Wordless Wednesday, Friday Feast, blogging chicks, Photo hunt and many more of those great ideas have been hitting me all day. There is so much out there and so confusing for a fairly new blogger. But I will over the next few weeks endeavour to be a part of as many of them as I can. They are great ideas and obviously some great people to meet out there too (even if it is through the blog and they are on the other side of the world). Maybe at some stage we can swap addresses and send postcards to each other from around the globe. So I am giving my head a deserved rest now (plus have to start dinner soon). I have really enjoyed looking at some great sites today check these out:
Fridays Child
Drama Queen's Momma

All great sites - you have all inspired me. See you all soon.

Tracking those special events
Well I am feeling quite proud of myself today. I am working out how to link things to my blog - probably will overdo it for a while. So as you can I am now tracking my weight (an incentive I hope) and also letting you all know how long until our 21st Wedding Anniversary (which I am very proud of). I also added the moon phases a few days ago. I love the moon - not sure why - it is beautiful.
Recipe of the Week - Chilli and Lime chicken salad
The days are getting warmer in this part of the world - almost Spring. So light easy salads are making their way to the table.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup (250ml) water
1 cup (250ml) chicken stock
340g chicken breast fillets
1 small carrot (70g)
1 small red capsicum (150g), sliced thinly
½ small chinese cabbage (200g), shredded finely
2 green onions, chopped finely
¾ cup (60g) bean sprouts
½ cup firmly packed fresh coriander leaves
100g watercress, trimmed
CHILLI LIME DRESSING:
¼ cup (60ml) lime juice
2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
METHOD
1. Bring the water and stock to a boil in large saucepan. Reduce heat; add chicken, simmer about 10 minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Allow chicken to cool in cooking liquid before draining. Discard liquid; slice chicken thinly.
2. Meanwhile, halve carrot crossways, cut each half into 2mm-wide lengths; cut lengths into matchstick-thin strips.
3. Place chicken and carrot in large bowl with capsicum, cabbage, onion, sprouts, coriander and watercress; add chilli lime dressing, toss to combine.
Chilli lime dressing:
Combine ingredients in screw-topped jar; shake well.
Enjoy!!

A busy few days!!
Well I have had a few busy days and haven't been able to get to the computer. We are starting the process of building our next house. So have been running around choosing colours, tiles, carpets etc. Hubby works away but has been home this week, so we are both trying to cram alot into this week. Between signing contracts and picking paints we have been able to make some time for each other and the kids. So just a quick break - have not lost any weight, but haven't gained any either - yee haa!! Struggling with the exercise but am doing little bits. Anyway the sun is shining on us so can't complain. Bye for now

Oh no I've put on weight!!!
Don't know why I even weighed myself - didn't need to I could tell by my waistbands that I had put on weight. So what to do - enjoy my food too much to diet, although I could include more fruit and veg into my diet (yes I will) - will just have to start walking. The sun is up before 6am now so I guess I can go for a walk before I get everyone ready for school and work. Gee it's going to be hard - it's still a bit cool of a morning - but I really have to. I'll report my progress over the coming weeks - need to lose about 10 kilograms - phew!! I'm tired just thinking about it. But I'll give it my best shot - here goes - wish me luck!!
